The optical system includes a telescope, a moving mirror, a fixed mirror, and a filter; the angle reading device consists of a graduated arc, an index rod, a drum-shaped wheel, and a vernier scale. These components are all installed on the frame and are connected as a whole through the index rod to the optical system and the angle reading device. The sextant measures angles based on geometric principles such as "the exterior angle of a triangle is equal to the sum of the two non-adjacent interior angles", "corresponding angles on parallel lines are equal", and "the central angle can be measured by the arc distance it intercepts".
