Product DescriptionProduct IntroductionThe Clegg Impact Soil Tester provides a simple and direct method for measuring the hardness of natural and synthetic sports surfaces. The device consists of a 2.25 kg compaction hammer that travels within a vertical guide tube.Working Principle:Data Storage:Test Surfaces:The tester features a 2.25 kg hammer that operates within a vertical tube. When the hammer is released and impacts the test surface, the deceleration rate is determined by the stiffness of the material at the impact area. The stiffness value, GM, is displayed and serves as an indicator of soil hardness.After release, the hammer falls freely within the guide tube and strikes the test surface. The stiffness of the impacted material dictates the rate of deceleration.A digital readout, mounted on the side of the tube, allows users to read values directly from the top. The device features a single-button design for ease of use.Wireless data transmission is a key feature of the tester. Users can wirelessly download test results to a computer using the provided software.The instrument offers reliable ball rebound predictions for football and cricket fields. It is also useful for evaluating surface uniformity in equestrian arenas. One common application is to help identify soft and hard spots on a field.Body Design:Test Execution:Test Results:The Clegg soil stiffness tester is built tough for long-term use, even in wet and harsh field conditions. Made of high-strength alloy proven to last for decades, the device is powered by two AA batteries and stored in an aluminum transport case.The test procedure is simple. Place the guide tube vertically on the test surface. The digital display is mounted on the tube, allowing for hands-free reading. Raise the hammer until the white line is level with the tube's top (as shown in the illustration), then release it. The drop value is displayed in GM and saved in the device's flash memory with a timestamp.The standard procedure involves one drop per test point, but an optional setting allows for three drops per location, with the third reading typically used as the reference value.The above image shows a third-drop reading of 107 GM.Surface hardness or stiffness, which affects ball rebound and roll, can be quickly established and monitored. Changes due to moisture, turf growth, and seasonal wear can be easily detected. The CBR ratio can be used to validate the test algorithm.
