Its name is derived from its y-shaped form. This typeis commonly used in pressurized lines, steam, liquid or gas, but can also be applied in vacuum or suctionsituation. It has low resistance to fluid passage or straight passage which in turn results to low pressureloss. This is why y-strainers are being utilized for applications where only small amounts of solid particulatesare expected to be drained and frequent clean out would not be necessary.The y strainer is normally used where there is a small amount of material to be collected. This strainercan be installed in the horizontal or vertical position. The basket must be to the bottom of the pipe orfacing the down flow direction to collect the particles. A y strainer can come with a blow-off connectionfor automatic cleaning. With liquids y strainers have a greater pressure drop than basket strainers becauseof their size (comparing same sizes). But with gases a y strainer has a relatively low pressure drop.Installing a strainer before valves and instrumentation can save you costly maintenance and repair.
