Ambergris, a whale excretion found on beaches, is no longer used in perfume production for ethical reasons. Natural ambroxane, discovered in 1949, is used in perfumes. In perfumery, the ambergris note also refers to amber perfumes, which use labdanum essential oil and absolute as the base.
