Product Description --Product Introduction--Sodium benzoate (C7H5NaO2) is a widely used preservative in the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries. It is the sodium salt of benzoic acid and appears as a white, odorless powder that is highly soluble in water. Sodium benzoate functions primarily by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, yeasts, and molds, thereby extending the shelf life of products.Sodium benzoate consists of a benzene ring with a carboxylate group attached, forming the sodium salt of benzoic acidUnlike benzoic acid, which has limited solubility in water, sodium benzoate dissolves readily in water, making it easier to incorporate into aqueous solutions.Sodium benzoate works best in acidic environments (pH 2.5 to 4.0). At higher pH levels, it converts back to benzoic acid, which is less soluble but more effective as a preservative due to its undissociated form.Sodium benzoate is commonly produced by the neutralization of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) with benzoicacid (C6H5COOH) which is itself produced commercially by partial oxidation of toluene with oxygen.The antiseptic mechanism of sodium benzoate is: benzoic acid is highly lipophilic and can easily pass through the cell membrane and enter the cell, interfering with the permeability of the cell membrane of microorganisms such as bacteria and mold, and inhibiting the absorption of amino acids by the cell membrane.
