Alloy melting and castingThe preparation of Nitinol requires strict control of the nickel-titanium ratio (usually 50.7% Ni-49.3% Ti or a specific ratio such as 60% Ni for Nitinol 60)Vacuum consumable melting: To avoid titanium oxidation, vacuum consumable melting technology is used. The consumable electrode is composed of a nickel or titanium core rod and a dissimilar metal ring plate. Spot welding is used to reduce welding stress and prevent brittle cracking.Composition control: For example, Nitinol 60 needs to ensure that the titanium content is 39%~41%. The consumable electrode design optimizes the composition uniformity after melting.2. Plastic processing and formingThe traditional method converts ingots into wires, tubes or sheets through plastic processing:Hot stretching process: used to produce tubes, such as hot stretching a 20 mm outer diameter tube to 13.6 mm through multiple passes, and the core rod is removed after auxiliary formingRolling and drawing: Wire production requires high-temperature rolling to overcome the high toughness of the material, and then cold drawing to adjust the size3. Additive manufacturing (3D printing)For complex structures, additive manufacturing technologies (such as selective laser melting, SLM) have become mainstream:Laser parameter optimization: The laser energy density affects the phase change temperature and needs to be finely adjusted to maintain the shape memory effect. For example, BLT uses fine spot laser to print vascular stents with fine structures of 0.1~0.2 mmMicrostructure control: impurities and micro defects need to be avoided to ensure superelasticity and biocompatibility4.
